Know the Signs of Infection to get Proper Treatment Fast

Knowing the signs of a wound infection is important.

wound infection can negatively impact the healing process. If not treated as quickly as possible, it can create a situation in which the wound becomes chronic and can lead to a number of complications, including the need for amputation.

Causes of infections

Wound infections can result from a number of sources, according to Reader’s Digest. A scrape from falling on a sidewalk, for instance, can leave bits of asphalt and other germ-filled particles in your skin. Meanwhile, a cut from a rusty piece of metal can require medical attention to prevent an infection.

In addition to accidents, surgical site infections are extremely common and costly compared to other hospital-acquired infections, according to a news release issued by the American College of Surgeons and the Surgical Infection Society.

The organizations stated that 2 percent to 5 percent (160,000 to 300,000) of all patients who undergo inpatient surgery acquire an infection which costs hospitals between $3.5 billion and $10 billion per year. In addition, the organization said, they can extend the length of a hospital stay by almost 10 days.

Here are a few of the causes and signs of an infected wound that you should make note of:

Persistent redness

While the area around a cut will appear unusual for a time, if it continues to appear red or begins to worsen, it could be a sign that the wound has become infected. Wounds where the red area appears to expand, or where tissue is visible (it can be confused for pus), are indications that you should seek the assistance of a clinician.

Continuous pain

A wound can cause you pain, but when the pain increases or goes on longer than it should, that could be a sign that it’s become infected. Visit a clinician if the pain lingers or intensifies.

Wound Care Advisor states that drainage from a wound is normal during the inflammatory period of the healing process and that a small amount of drainage is normal. But heavy drainage can be a sign of infection, as is liquid that is green or smells foul. By contrast, yellowish liquid or substance is a normal part of the healing process.

While the symptoms of an infection may seem to be centered around the wound itself, they can result in illness that affects your entire body, such as a fever or nausea.
