The Many Benefits of Fish in Facilitating Wound Care

The Many Benefits of Fish in Facilitating Wound Care

A group of researchers and designers in California believe that VR tech could be an effective way to manage pain.

Adding fish to your wound care regimen can decrease your healing times.

If you have ever had to maintain a wound care regimen, you’ll understand the importance of a proper diet. Certain foods can have a huge effect on wound healing, and proper nutrition is an essential component of most people’s overall treatment. For instance, eggs contain vital protein that the body needs to regrow tissue structures. Yogurt, meanwhile, has been proven to help prevent most infections. But if there is one food that is especially versatile when it comes to proper wound care, that’d have to be fish.

Nutritious Fish Dishes

When it comes to bolstering the immune system, fish is one of the most common options suggested by doctors and other caregivers. That’s because fish is jam-packed with a slew of important nutrients. Vitamin D, for instance, is responsible for the production of key peptides needed for the immune system to function. Omega-3 fatty acids, however, are the real powerhouse of fish; these compounds not only aid the immune system but also properly regulate the body’s inflammatory response. Fish are also a great source of healthy fats, like polyunsaturated or monounsaturated. These fats help prevent buildups in the arteries, and that helps for more streamlined wound healing in the long run.

A Mighty Oil

For people who don’t generally like the taste of fish, some doctors might suggest the use of certain supplements. One of the most popular such supplements is cod liver oil. There is quite the library of research demonstrating the many wound healing benefits of this oil. All of that power has to do with the vitamin A and D found within cod liver oil, which improve the immune system and can prevent some infections. One study, published in the Journal of Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery, examined cod liver oil’s effectiveness as an ointment. In a series of clinical trials involving laboratory mice, the oil significantly sped up wound healing and blood vessel regeneration.

Swimming Toward the Future

Fish aren’t just beneficial when consumed or used in cod liver oil. Several recent wound care innovations have been made using or were inspired by fish. For example, a team from Duke University used modified Zebrafish to study the exact mechanisms of wound healing. Around the same time, Atlantic Cod scales were used to create a new, more efficient kind of bandage. Some scientists have even started studying tilapia skin to develop new wound dressings. It just goes to show how essential fish are when it comes to more impactful and long-lasting wound care.
